2010 Music at the Doo-Nanny

Mad Tea Party

mad_tea-promoUke-abilly. Retro-Pop. Rock 'n' Roll. Mad Tea Party brews up rock 'n' roll, garage-pop and honky tonk to create a fresh and intoxicating sound. "It's B-52s meets Buddy Holly with a lot more thump." Musical conspirators Ami Worthen and Jason Krekel serve up an exciting live show to music lovers thirsty for upbeat, original refreshment. Delicious harmonies glide over electrified ukulele, juke-joint guitar, scratchy fiddle and pulsing foot percussion. Catchy songs are steeped in raw rockabilly with shreds of doo wop and devilish blues. Drink deep - Mad Tea Party concocts a musical recipe that will make you boogie.

The band's dynamic show has been catching people's attention across the country. Metro Santa Cruz described it this way, "More a spectacle than a traditional two-person band, Mad Tea Party consists of vocalist and ukulele strummer Ami Worthen and guitarist, fiddler and drummer Jason Krekel. As Worthen reels out charming and quirky songs with an arch sense of humor, Krekel does double- and triple-duty, creating the illusion of a much bigger band with only two arms and two legs. It's a sight to behold...but Mad Tea Party's unique sound is just as worthy of note. A bubbly amalgam of juke-joint blues, pop, tiki exotica and rockabilly, the band has honed an approach that is unique and affecting without being too precious."

Screaming Js

jake-pianoThe Screaming J's are bringing the boogie back. Members' band credits include The Blue Rags, Firecracker Jazz Band, The Mad Tea Party, and Squirrel Nut Zippers. These energetic rockers have over 12 years and thousands of miles experience getting crowds up on their feet and dancing. Started by Jake Hollifield on the keys & Jason Krekel on the guitar as an eclectic electric diversion from their other projects, the sound is fueled by the high energy rhythm of Mike Gray on drums, special guest ?? on bass, and filled with organ goodness by electronic wizard JonPaul Hess. This isn't your typical cover band, but a conversion band taking classic boogie woogie rhythms, lyrics, and riffs and layering them with original twists and turns to create something new with every show.

You may have caught a bit of the Screaming J's last fall at Boo-Nanny rocking the night away. The band is excited to make their return to Seale, AL this spring and keep the boogie woogie alive until we all fall down.

Songwriter Jenny Greer has an all-encompassing generosity of personality and has never met a stranger. A “twenty-something” diva of the Indy Asheville music scene, she’s been writing and playing since she was 12 and formed her current band Jen and the Juice six years ago. Her breezy openness draws people in and lets the creative process channel out in her songwriting. Their third and newest CD “Fruit” is an evolution whose time has come, earning attention and recognition at the national level. (Her last CD, “Meet the Hooligans of Bohemia” made regional public radio WNCW’s “Top Ten” list in 2006.)

Thessaly Lerner, The Ukulady, fell in love with a Columbus, GA native, and after experiencing the Possom Trot, the Bay Area native, was Doo-Nanny hooked. The Ukulady most recently opened for Dr. Demento, shared the stage with Dr. Patch Adams & Wavy Gravy and rang in New Year 2010 playing in Kit'n'Tenders, her new band with Gabby La La at Les Claypool's party at the famed Fillmore West in San Francisco. The Ukulady loves her some deep south Doo Nanny Fever! To The Downfall of Evil!

Will Dockery

will-dockery

The Shadowville All-Stars provide the musical canvas for the word paintings of Will Dockery, the Poet Laureate of Shadowville. Individually, we are a dozen-or-so musical merry pranksters who rotate in and out of the lineup at different venues. Collectively we are The Shadowville All-Stars. Artists who share the stage with us in a live performance become Shadowville All-Stars forever. It's kind of like the Baseball Hall-of-Fame, only you can't get kicked out for gambling...

Butter Holler

butterholler
Did someone say possum? Butter Hollar String Band & friends will be appearing sporadically at this year’s Doo-nanny as they make their pilgrimage to the motherland of pickin’ porches and the sacred temple of the Possum Trot to bring an offering of that Old-Time Appalachian straight from the Mountains of Western North Carolina.  Butter Hollar is “Eboo” Sauls (of Devilish Mary) on the Fiddle and Guitar and Lois Jolly (of The Red Hot Sugar Babies) on banjo & washtub bass.  When you hear the music, pull up your roots and dance.
Here’s what the critics are saying:
“Butter Hollar is glitter rock’s stepsister’s cousin” Rolling-Stoned Magazine
“There is a banjo in that band” Guitar Aviator Weekly
“RootsRageous!” The Old-Time Harold
